As you guys know, we are just starting off making our own magazine. I just heard that a new magazine titled "Lipstick Magazine" was released. Being a blog owner and a new writer for a magazine in the works, I know how tough it is to get followers and make great posts, articles, and graphics. So many people have been following the motion to make new magazines, which was very rare considering we only had a few to read monthly. Now it is getting even harder to make an impression on the stardollians with 100s of blogs and more than a dozen magazines that have been established, failed to deliver, or are in the works. So many of our old, beautiful magazines are falling apart after a year or two of intense writing, graphics making, and preparations to make the best mag possible for readers to see. Trust me, it's not as easy as it sounds. Anyone can say "I'm going to make a magazine today," but it takes a lot more heart, determination, and guts (the magazine may not be as great as others and may be put down and compared to ones that have been around for years and are amazing because of the owners' experience) to fulfill that statement. That is why I commend the owners and workers for Lipstick Magazine, because they have done what almost seems impossible to some stardollians that are afraid to get themselves out there because of fears for bad publicity and exile from the stardoll scene.
Now to get down to the hard part, stating what is wrong with the magazine.
When you put it all down on paper, it sounds like a recipe for success- a good staff with determination and vision, owners that are definitely leaders, and some pretty good article topics. When you actually get to the release, though, some things may be a little off. I found that some of the writers made a lot of grammatical mistakes and used slang and texting terms instead of making it more formal. In some ways, it shows that they are grounded, and don't take themselves too seriously like they are the best around. It also portrays some other good qualities such as not pretending like they don't have anything to learn and that they are too seasoned to take criticism. You may think I'm reading into it too much, and they may just be careless, but I think that they were trying to make it more casual for readers and make sure those other qualities I mentioned were evident (in other words, it didn't seem stuffy with the texting words tucked in).
I also felt like there were 2 main graphics that were totally from scratch, and the rest may have been taken from stardoll outfits. They also used shoes on those two graphics from stardoll. I know that it is very hard to make amazing graphics and to get seasoned graphics designers, but I would've preferred the release to be later and be better to make a great first impression. I just want all of them to remember this: Don't pump out issues like maniacs and put one out once a month, but put one out maybe every 2 or 3 months, or even as the seasons change. That will leave us wanting more, and your graphics, articles, and overall morale will be better. Good luck with your magazine, and I hope that you have all of the success as many of the long-running magazines in the spotlight have.
More importantly, what did you think?
Let me know in the comments.
